Melody Howlett

I am a registered social worker. I have tertiary training in social work and psychology, including a major focus on relationships science and adult attachments. I also have specialist training in Gottman relationship therapy and am invested in supporting couples and families to build positive and fulfilling relationships for every member. The Gottman method is an evidence-based approach to increasing connection and communication that is emotion focused. 70% of couples who engage in emotion-focused therapy recover from their difficulties, and 90% find their relationship significantly improved, with long lasting, stable change.

I support individuals of all ages, personalities and abilities in relationships to better relate to, understand and communicate with one another and increase their sense of connection. I understand that people’s lives are complicated and there are lots of things that can impact on the relationship from mental health challenges to experiences of abuse and trauma from one or both people’s past, breaches of trust, balancing work and family, and differences in expectations around shared time, sex and intimacy.

I have particular interests in helping couples stuck in demand and withdraw patterns of connecting where one partner feels overwhelmed and the other partner feels like their partner isn’t meeting their needs (which is a very common experience).

I can support you with recognising and regulating your own difficult emotions and supporting one anothers triggers and needs during conflict. I can also support you with finding ways to communicate through challenging issues without them escalating and to increase feelings of trust and connection.

I also support couples where one or both partners are autistic and navigating different needs and styles of communicating and connecting.

My approach is LGBTIQA+ and polyamory-friendly. Please let me know how I can best support your communication preferences and any access needs when requesting an appointment.
